There is a secret spot you most likely have not heard about tucked in the hills of Rancho Palos Verdes a mere hour and a half away from our small town. Here you will feel like you are a world away as you stroll the beautiful grounds of the resort, watch dolphins play in the ocean, hike to an enchanted lighthouse or sit down and enjoy a nice glass of wine while you listen to waves crashing in the background. So, what is this place called… Terranea Resort!
My husband and I have traveled here several times since they opened in 2009. We have gone alone for our anniversary, we have taken the kids and brought friends and each time has been an amazing and unique experience.
If you go alone you will enjoy the peace and serenity of the adults only pool that sits right on the ocean. I would recommend you head up to Wayfarers Chapel to see the beautiful stained glass windows or take a hike along one of the many trails along the ocean. We have even ventured further off site into Long Beach to kayak in the canals and eat the world’s best Mediterranean food at Open Sesame… okay that is my claim but how else can you explain the fact that they have two identical restaurants two doors down from each other on the same street and they both will always have a wait? Yup… see best in the world!!!
If you are brave enough to take the kids you will be pleasantly surprised by the water-slide, splash park and sand area at their pool. You can call concierge and for a small fee they will deliver everything you need to roast s’mores by the fire-pit. There are tons of open grass areas and lawn games and in the summer months they serve snow cones and have dive in movies too! Your kids won’t want to miss the hawk and owl that come out before sunset. And, all of the restaurants are kid friendly too! If you feel like splurging stay in a casita which is complete with a kitchen and washer and dryer which make taking the kids that much easier… although just a warning when you have to leave don’t be surprised if you are weeping like a baby. I extended my check out and then squatted for an additional two hours until the maid came just trying to delay my departure. And, don’t laugh you will do it too!
A few additional tips:
* If you go on your birthday (actual day) you get a free delicious Surf & Turf dinner at the Catalina Kitchen… my husband said it was ah-mazing- and I was jealous!!!
*The have a big Sunday brunch but the smaller (cheaper) Saturday brunch is actually my fav and kids 4 and under are FREE!!!
* They have amazing concierge services… I was able to request cupcakes and beer for my hubby and the cupcakes were complimentary from the hotel- woot! woot!
*Don’t forget to drive 15 minutes to visit Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream… you will regret it if you don’t. The were on National Geographic’s 10 Best of Everything List!!! Oh, and get the buckeye flavor it’s the best. Although, my daughter will defend her consistent choice of strawberry (but you know she only chooses it bc its pink).
Have Fun… Be Savvy!!!
So, there you have it a fantastic stay-cation. You are WELCOME!!!!
